Miss Klamath County is an OIT Student; Paying it Forward

Stephanie Steers was named Miss Klamath County at the annual Miss Klamath County/Miss City of Sunshine Scholarship Pageant on Saturday. She is a Dental Hygiene student. The scholarship pageant is part of the Miss America pageant system. More than $28,000 in scholarships were awarded locally.

Five other OIT students were participants, including:

Among the scholarships being vied for was the Pay It Forward Scholarship, based upon the book by Catherine Ryan Hyde. Each contestant wrote an essay about the concept, how it applied to their own lives and their plan to implement paying it forward personally. Visit the Pay It Forward Foundation for more information on the concept.

The Oregon Center for Health Professions really exemplifies the pay it forward attitude. Numerous individuals and organizations have made the Center a reality. Those making contributions may never need the services of the students educated at the Center, but the donors have made lives better just for the investment in someones education whom they many never know.

It's a very powerful thought.

Congratulations, Denise Langley

Denise Langley is a 1990 graduate of OIT's Nursing program. In her era, OIT had its own Nursing degree, but things have changed since then. All Nursing programs at Oregon University System schools now are administered by Oregon Health & Science University.

In fact, OHSU's Nursing program will move into the Martha Anne Dow Center for Health Professions' second wing. The program will then be able to admit more Nursing students. It's a great partnership between OIT and OHSU.

Any way, back to Denise. She was nominated by OHSU, the hospital in Portland not the local Nursing program, staff and faculty as the Emergency Department Nurse of the Year. She was lauded as an exemplary nurse, educator and leader. Denise is a wonderful human being who has dedicated her life to helping others, specifically in the area of pediatrics.

OIT alumni are doing wonderful things, and everyone is proud of Denise.

Externships ahead

Medical Imaging juniors will soon learn the location of their externship sites for next year. The clinical externship is one of the great opportunities afforded OIT students in the medical imaging arena. A full year is spent at a site practicing professionalism at medical centers, clinics and other venues.

Dan Hallesy, a member of the President's Advisory Council who works for Toshiba America Medical Systems, said recently that all of the practice scanning done by OIT students makes them highly desirable to employers. He also mentioned that the fact OIT offers bachelor's degrees makes students and alumni more employable.

It's great to have the support of well-respected industry partners, including Toshiba and the clinical externship sites.

Looking good

Jon Wiener, principal of the SRG Partnership architectural firm, sent along some renderings of the second wing today. I'll post the most visual here. I also have some blueprint-type diagrams. It's wonderful to envision what the future holds.

Being in the money doesn't mean we have all we need

Yesterday's post may have misled some readers to believe that we are finished fundraising.

The reality is that we have fulfilled our financial need from the State of Oregon toward construction. For the first wing of the Center, OIT received a $10 million Article XI-F bond for construction. Toward the second wing, we received $9 million total ($5.5 in the 2007 Legislative Session and $3.5 in the February 2008 Special Session) in Article XI-G bond funding.

What's the difference between an F bond and a G bond? An F is fine, but you have to pay it back to the state. The G is great, because it does not have to be repaid.

The Prescription for Oregon capital campaign continues, as we still need funding for equipment and other expenses.

We're in the money

The Oregon Legislature Friday approved the $3.5 million Article XI-G bond needed to complete construction on the Dow Center.

Thanks go out to Senator Doug Whitsett, Representative Bill Garrard and Representative George Gilman for their continued support on this project.

We will be able to have occupancy of the second wing in Fall 2009.
